The ICC has officially confirmed Scotland as Bangladesh’s replacement for the T20 World Cup 2026, set to begin on February 7 across India and Sri Lanka. The decision, while expected, was formalised on Saturday (January 24) after the Bangladesh Cricket Board failed to align with ICC policy within a 24-hour deadline issued earlier this week.
Why Bangladesh Were Replaced in the T20 World Cup 2026
Sources indicate that the final call was taken on Saturday morning, when ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta wrote to the ICC Board stating that Bangladesh’s demands were inconsistent with established tournament regulations. The letter reportedly made it clear that the BCB was not complying with the Board’s directive, leaving the ICC with no alternative but to invite another team—Scotland—to fill the vacant spot.
The communication was circulated to all ICC Board members, including BCB president Aminul Islam. While the ICC moved swiftly, formal confirmation from Cricket Scotland was still awaited at the time of reporting, though it is understood that discussions between ICC headquarters in Dubai and officials in Edinburgh are already underway.
With the change, Scotland will now compete in Group C during the preliminary phase. Their schedule includes matches against West Indies (February 7), Italy (February 9), and England (February 14) in Kolkata, followed by a fixture against Nepal in Mumbai on February 17.
The development brings clarity to a situation that had been hanging in the balance for days and reshapes the group dynamics ahead of the global tournament.
