Sunrisers Eastern Cape Dominate Paarl Royals to Book Fourth Straight SA20 Final

James Coles celebrates after powering Sunrisers Eastern Cape into the SA20 final

Sunrisers Eastern Cape delivered another ruthless knockout performance, brushing aside Paarl Royals by seven wickets in Qualifier 2 of the SA20 at the Wanderers on Friday (January 23) to storm into their fourth consecutive final.

A disciplined bowling effort led by Senuran Muthusamy and a match-winning all-round display from James Coles proved decisive as Sunrisers wrapped up the chase with more than eight overs to spare.

Bowlers Lay the Foundation

Put in to bat on a dry surface offering sharp turn and uneven bounce, Paarl Royals struggled to gain any momentum. Early breakthroughs from Lutho Sipamla, followed by sustained pressure from Anrich Nortje and Marco Jansen, left the Royals on the back foot almost immediately.

Nortje removed Rubin Hermann, while Coles and Muthusamy took charge through the middle overs. Coles drew a leading edge from Dan Lawrence, and Muthusamy followed it up by having Asa Tribe smartly stumped by Quinton de Kock. With the scoreboard reading 34 for 4 inside seven overs, the Royals were already in deep trouble.

Verreynne Fights a Lone Battle

Amid the collapse, Kyle Verreynne stood firm. He showed composure against spin, picking his moments carefully and rotating strike to keep the innings moving. A clean strike over extra cover off Coles brought up the Royals’ fifty, though it arrived only in the 13th over.

Support was scarce. Sikandar Raza struggled to accelerate and was eventually stumped off Muthusamy, who struck again in the same over by removing Rovman Powell, caught at slip. Muthusamy ended with impressive figures of 3 for 15, while Royals slipped to 75 for 6 after 15 overs.

Verreynne pressed on regardless, raising a gritty half-century from 41 deliveries. A few late boundaries from Bjorn Fortuin and Hardus Viljoen helped Paarl Royals crawl past the 110 mark, but 114 for 7 always looked well below par.

Coles Seals It in Style

The chase began briskly, with Quinton de Kock setting the tone by smashing 25 off 12 balls, including a pair of towering sixes. Paarl Royals briefly clawed back through Bjorn Fortuin, who bowled de Kock and trapped Jonny Bairstow lbw in the same over.

Jordan Hermann counter-attacked with a flurry of boundaries, but Ottneil Baartman struck late in the PowerPlay to remove him, leaving Sunrisers at 50 for 3.

From there, it was the James Coles show. Walking in under lights on a surface that had eased considerably, Coles announced himself with a first-ball six off Baartman. He then dismantled Dan Lawrence in a costly over that yielded 21 runs, swinging the contest decisively in Sunrisers’ favour.

With Matthew Breetzke playing a quiet supporting role, Coles unleashed freely, striking four fours and three sixes in a blistering 45 not out from just 19 balls. The winning runs came via a towering straight hit off Lhuan-dre Pretorius as Sunrisers completed the chase in 11.4 overs.

Another Final Beckons

The emphatic victory underlined Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s dominance in the tournament, as they once again marched into the SA20 final with confidence and momentum firmly on their side.
