Small Breakdowns, Big Lessons for UP Warriorz: Nayar

Abhishek Nayar reflects on UP Warriorz season during WPL 2026

Abhishek Nayar didn’t point to one defining moment behind UP Warriorz’s disappointing WPL 2026 season. From the head coach’s perspective, there was no single breakdown to blame — instead, a series of small issues gradually added up.

“Some seasons make it difficult to isolate one clear reason,” Nayar said while reflecting on a campaign that saw UPW finish bottom of the table for a second straight year. Despite assembling a strong squad at the mega auction, consistency remained elusive. The Warriorz managed only two wins, briefly gaining momentum with back-to-back victories over Mumbai Indians before losing their rhythm once the tournament moved to Vadodara.

A major turning point came with the loss of Phoebe Litchfield at a crucial stage of the season. At the time, the Australian batter was UPW’s leading run-scorer with 243 runs from six innings and had settled into a key role at No. 3. “In the business end, you want your in-form players available,” Nayar said. “After Phoebe left, that position didn’t look the same, and it was tough to replace her impact.”

UPW experimented with Amy Jones in the penultimate match and later handed Charli Knott her debut in the final league game. By then, qualification hopes were hanging by a thread.

The struggles extended beyond the middle order. UPW repeatedly failed to get solid starts at the top — a concern Nayar linked to a fundamental T20 principle. “When your top order fires, the team generally does well,” he said. Kiran Navgire endured a difficult season, and while several combinations were tried, none delivered consistently. Harleen Deol was given a brief opportunity, which Nayar admitted may not have been timed perfectly. Deepti Sharma eventually opened in the final two matches and showed promise.

Asked whether Deepti’s promotion could have come earlier, Nayar acknowledged the clarity hindsight brings. However, he stressed the decision wasn’t impulsive. Against table-toppers RCB, the move was driven by match-up data — particularly Lauren Bell’s record against left-handers — and the absence of Litchfield. Deepti responded with scores of 55 and 29, though Nayar cautioned against viewing the switch as a long-term fix.

Despite the on-field instability, Nayar maintained that clarity within the group remained intact, even during difficult selection calls. Shweta Sehrawat, the only retained player ahead of the season, struggled for form and was left out of the final match. Navgire, opening alongside captain Meg Lanning, managed three ducks and only 16 runs otherwise before being dropped.

“Retention doesn’t guarantee anything,” Nayar explained. “We’ve been honest with players. Everyone has been backed fully, but when a season doesn’t go your way, the team has to look ahead and explore other options.”

There were still positives to carry forward. Nayar highlighted Lanning as the leader the franchise had been searching for, while describing Litchfield as an exceptional talent. He also praised Shikha Pandey’s influence both on and off the field. “Individually, there were good performances, but collectively we couldn’t piece it together,” he said.

For Nayar, in his first full season working in women’s cricket, Lanning’s presence proved invaluable. “She commands respect without saying much,” he noted. “Her actions do the talking.” Even during a difficult campaign, Lanning’s approach never wavered — training hard, leading from the front, and maintaining team morale.

As results slipped away, the management shifted focus from short-term survival to long-term growth. Players were encouraged to observe opposition tactics and identify areas for personal improvement. “When results don’t go your way, the conversations change,” Nayar said. “It becomes about how players can grow, not just this season but in their careers.”

The disappointment of 2026 will sting, but Nayar believes UP Warriorz have taken away valuable lessons — in leadership, transparency, and identifying core talent. When the turnaround arrives, he is confident Lanning will be central to it, guiding the franchise toward better days ahead.
