Rickelton In, Injuries Out: South Africa’s T20 World Cup Squad Gets a Late Shake-Up

Ryan Rickelton celebrates his century during SA20 as he earns selection in South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad

After weeks of debate and frustration, Ryan Rickelton is officially heading to the T20 World Cup. The left-hander has been named in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, alongside Tristan Stubbs, following injury setbacks to Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira.

Cricket South Africa confirmed the updates on Thursday, making it clear that injuries—not form—forced the late changes ahead of next month’s tournament in Sri Lanka and India.

Injuries Pile Up at the Worst Possible Time

South Africa’s World Cup preparations have been rocked by a string of fitness scares in the SA20.

David Miller is battling a groin injury and is unlikely to feature in Paarl Royals’ eliminator. Lungi Ngidi was forced off the field after bowling just half his overs with a heavily strapped leg, while Dewald Brevis, despite a blistering unbeaten 75 off 38 balls, picked up a finger injury.

All three players remain part of the Proteas T20 World Cup squad, but fitness is now the biggest concern.

Ottneil Baartman Still Left Out Despite SA20 Brilliance

One name missing yet again is Ottneil Baartman—the leading wicket-taker of SA20 2026 with 17 wickets. Despite outperforming several selected bowlers, Baartman remains on the outside as selectors back Ngidi’s recovery.

CSA sources believe Ngidi will be fully fit by the World Cup, leaving Baartman unlucky rather than overlooked.

Rickelton’s Recall Ends Selection Storm

Rickelton’s omission from South Africa’s prematurely announced squad earlier this month triggered major backlash. And for good reason.

The opener smashed two consecutive centuries in the SA20, including dominant knocks of 113* at Newlands and 113 at the Wanderers. Yet he was overlooked while De Zorzi—who hadn’t played since early December due to a hamstring injury—was included.

CSA has now admitted De Zorzi’s recovery timeline made his selection risky, clearing the way for Rickelton’s return to the national setup.

Rickelton has also been named in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies.

Miller’s Fitness the Big Unknown

While Ngidi and Brevis are expected to recover, concern remains around David Miller. At 36, a groin injury is no small issue, and Paarl Royals calling in replacement cover suggests the problem is serious.

CSA confirmed Miller’s T20 World Cup availability depends on a final fitness test before the support phase.

Rubin Hermann Seizes His Opportunity

Miller’s situation has opened the door for Rubin Hermann, who has quietly impressed with 205 runs in eight innings for Eastern Cape. Hermann is now in contention for the West Indies T20Is, a golden opportunity to push for long-term selection.

Transformation Debate Resurfaces, CSA Pushes Back

De Zorzi’s original inclusion once again sparked debate around CSA’s transformation targets. Officials have strongly denied any political interference, stressing that team selection remains fully autonomous and in line with ICC regulations.

CSA also pointed to Ferreira’s selection—despite limited returns and his eventual injury—as proof that decisions were based on squad balance rather than race.

Stubbs Gets the Nod Amid Mixed Form

Tristan Stubbs hasn’t dominated the SA20 statistically, but selectors have backed his versatility and athleticism. Crucially, he remains fit—something that currently separates him from several others.
