Josh Hazlewood to Join Australia Squad Late for T20 World Cup 2026

Josh Hazlewood Australia T20 World Cup 2026 injury update

Josh Hazlewood is set to link up with Australia later during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, with the fast bowler staying back in Sydney to continue his rehabilitation from an Achilles injury.

Australia will arrive in Sri Lanka for the tournament without Hazlewood, who last featured in a T20I in October 2025 against India. As a precautionary measure, the team management has opted to allow the pacer more recovery time in familiar conditions before travelling.

Sean Abbott named as travelling reserve

In Hazlewood’s absence, Sean Abbott has been included as a travelling reserve to provide fast-bowling cover. The decision comes as Australia monitor the fitness of their pace resources ahead of the tournament opener.

Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell, Nathan Ellis and Tim David are expected to join the squad in Colombo after missing the recent tour of Pakistan.

Selectors explain Hazlewood call

National selector Tony Dodemaide said the decision was taken with Hazlewood’s long-term fitness in mind.

The selectors felt it was more practical for Hazlewood to continue his rehabilitation at home rather than rushing his return before the World Cup. With Ellis also completing his return-to-play process, Abbott was added to the squad as cover in case of any last-minute concerns.

Opening match availability uncertain

As things stand, Hazlewood’s availability for Australia’s opening T20 World Cup match against Ireland on February 11 remains uncertain, with the team set to reassess his fitness closer to the game.

Australia will hope their experienced fast bowler can recover in time to strengthen the attack as the tournament progresses.
