Parsons shines with bat and ball as Brevis’ fireworks lift Capitals into SA20 final

bryce parsons and dewald brevis celebrate after leading pretoria capitals to the sa20 final

A superb all-round performance from Bryce Parsons, backed by a ferocious unbeaten knock from Dewald Brevis, carried Pretoria Capitals into their second SA20 final after a commanding seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the first Qualifier in Durban.

Parsons played a decisive role in both innings. His outstanding spell at the death, where he returned figures of 3 for 10, helped rein in the Sunrisers to 170 for 7. He then followed it up with a composed 60 off 44 balls, setting the platform for Brevis, who blasted an unbeaten 75 from just 38 deliveries, peppering the stands with seven sixes as the Capitals chased down the target with nine balls to spare.

The Capitals’ pursuit faced an early setback when Shai Hope departed during the PowerPlay, but Parsons quickly restored calm. Comfortable on the bounce, he punished anything short and rotated the strike effectively. Connor Esterhuizen settled in alongside him, and together they ensured the innings gathered momentum without undue risk. Their partnership took the Capitals past the 50-run mark in the seventh over.

The chase truly gathered pace once Brevis arrived after Esterhuizen was bowled by Chris Green. Brevis wasted no time in making his presence felt, striking a four and a six off Anrich Nortje in the 10th over as the Capitals reached 77 for 2 at the halfway stage. Both batters kept the pressure firmly on the bowlers, with Parsons bringing up his half-century from 40 balls.

By the end of the 16th over, the Capitals were cruising at 136 for 2, and Brevis soon raced to a 30-ball fifty, launching Marco Jansen for six. Sunrisers briefly sensed an opening when Nortje removed Parsons for 60, but Brevis ensured there would be no late twist. He dismantled Lewis Gregory in the 18th over, smashing three sixes in four balls to seal the win emphatically.

Earlier, Sunrisers Eastern Cape made a steady start after opting to bat. Quinton de Kock and Jonny Bairstow found early boundaries, with de Kock also clearing the ropes off Roston Chase before falling to a sharp piece of bowling from the West Indian. Bairstow, however, maintained the momentum, and with Jordan Hermann growing in confidence at the other end, Sunrisers reached 49 for 1 at the end of the PowerPlay.

Bairstow was particularly fluent through the middle overs, using sweeps and reverse sweeps to counter the spinners while punishing loose deliveries. He raised his half-century from 35 balls as he and Hermann added 81 runs for the second wicket in quick time. Sunrisers crossed 100 in the 11th over and looked well set for a total approaching 200 when Bairstow was trapped lbw by Keshav Maharaj in the 13th over.

At 125 for 2 after 14 overs, Sunrisers appeared firmly in control, but the momentum swung dramatically once Parsons was introduced. Bowling with precision and subtle variation, he dismantled the middle order. Hermann was bowled for 41, Jansen fell soon after, and Chris Green was stumped as the score slipped to 134 for 5. Parsons then struck again in the 19th over, trapping Matthew Breetzke in front, leaving Sunrisers struggling to rebuild.

A late flourish from James Coles, who struck two fours and a six off Lizaad Williams, pushed the total to 170, but it was never quite enough against a Capitals side in full flow.

Brief scores: Sunrisers Eastern Cape 170/7 (Jonny Bairstow 50, Jordan Hermann 41; Bryce Parsons 3-10, Keshav Maharaj 2-24) lost to Pretoria Capitals 172/3 (Dewald Brevis 75*, Bryce Parsons 60) by 7 wickets.
